They made the three-point line in basketball to make the game more interesting. Teams could try shooting the ball from farther away to get more points. This special line first came into play in the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967-1968.
The goal was to make teams score more by rewarding them for making shots from a specific distance. The three-point line added a smart part to the game. Coaches had to decide if their team should take riskier shots from far away for three points or go for closer shots worth two points.
This new rule changed basketball a lot. It affected how teams played offense, how good players became, and how the whole game was played. Players who were really good at shooting from far away became important for their teams. Now, the three-point shot is a big and important part of basketball strategy in all levels of the game.
